How to Prepare for Your Garden Soil Delivery

Topsoil Tips and Advice

In order to get the maximum benefit out of your topsoil it is important that you use it properly. Here are a few tips to ensure you get the most out of your garden soil delivery.

Basic Tips

  • To start off with, you must clear the pre-existing area before applying your new soil. Then, lightly turn over the top 5 inches of the pre-existing soil, this helps to loosen the ground and help make sure you get the most from your new soil.

  • If you have a lot of weeds in the pre-existing area you should first kill these off, as old weeds will grow through the new soil. This can be achieved by using a weed killer a few weeks in advance or removing the weeds and roots manually.

  • For bigger jobs, consider using a portable rotavator to quicken up the job. However, for a domestic garden, this can often be overkill.

The Soil Has to Breathe

It is best not to handle your new soil when wet, as it increases the chances of compaction. It will be difficult also to get good aeration through the soil when it rains. Once you have installed the new sol, try to minimize the amount of foot traffic on the new soil in order to prevent compaction. The better your soil can breathe, the more it will benefit you! It’s that simple.

Proper Soil Distribution

When it comes time to spread the soil, work backward, as this avoids compaction in the areas that you have already laid. Distribute the soil in piles around the area and use a rake to spread it, once done, use a fork to mix it into the pre-existing soil.
